The Strides of Society

The size of her Stomach

The size of her stomach
is the size of her fist
just the size of her fist
And she is told to fill it, everyday

10 years old
at Thanksgiving dinner
She takes a bite of each dish, stuffed until dessert comes
she squeezes down a slice of pie, and then another, and another

That 10 year old girl defines hunger
as something that will kill her
because she was taught that some people can’t afford a meal
some people can’t afford the crumbs
that fall from the people that have many meals a day
some people can’t afford the saliva
that falls from the lips of the people that sit around the table of food
the table of so much food, of too much food that most will be thrown in the trash

because if we have, we keep to ourselves
if we have too much, we throw away

12 years old,
she looks in the mirror hating her reflection
she calls herself fat
fat because she knows what she is supposed to look like
she’s supposed to straighten her hair
cover her face with makeup
paint her nails a different color everyday
stuff her legs inside the dress that ends at her hips
she’s not supposed to look the way she does

14 years old
she sits in her room alone
staring at pictures of girls who are so skinny
that my pinky finger is longer than their width
and she wants to be like that too

Every night, she has to lock herself in her room so that she won’t be reminded that the food on the table tastes so good. It tastes so good.

17 years old
she hasn’t had a full meal in couple of years
her bones poke through her skin
her lips fold over themselves
her feet fall out from the weight of her shoulders
and she cannot stand

She has become immune to hunger
so much that when she hasn’t eaten in three days,
she doesn’t feel anything
her stomach doesn’t growl, her body doesn’t ache
She just looks in the mirror, admiring the pretty being that looks back
17 years old and she dies. Because she wanted to be pretty.

The size of your stomach
is the size of your fist
just the size of your fist
And I’m asking you to fill it, everyday

Yes, I Know

yes, I know that I’m shaking
yes, I know that my palms are sweating and my voice is
pacing back and forth, alternating pitches and
yes, I know
I know that my face is turning red and my lips are quivering
yes, I know that my face is turning red and my eyes are watering
I know that my face is turning red
I know that I’m nervous, anxious
I know the fear that's inside
The fear of my past

The fear that if I tell you where I come from
you’ll take a knife and pierce it through my chest
If I tell you why I worship, why I recite certain prayers,
you’ll place your gun above my ear

If I walk down the street alone, you’ll take me to the ground
I’ll choke inside your arms, I’ll suffocate inside your hands
the hands that point at me when I stand up here,
the hands that are supposed to clap when I give a speech,
the hands that instead have ownership
to every woman when she’s alone

yes, I know that I cry. I know that my face is turning red and my eyes are watering.
I know that I cry.
I cry because I’m not enough. I cry because I want to be enough.
I want to say something to someone. I want it to mean something.

I cry because I don’t deserve all the good in my life. I don’t deserve all the good in my life.

I don’t cry because I’m scared to be alone. I don’t cry because I’ve seen people die.
I don’t cry because I haven’t made a difference.
I cry because I know that I have. I cry because that isn’t enough.
This isn’t enough.

American Voices & Visions

The American Voices Medal for writers and American Visions Medal for artists are the highest regional honors presented by the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Only one artist and one writer from each region is presented with this award each year.

Selection
Five works of art and five works of writing from each region are selected by local judges as American Voices & Visions Nominees. These nominees are celebrated in local exhibitions and ceremonies. From the pool of nominees, an esteemed panel of jurors in New York City then selects one writer and one artist from each region to receive an American Visions or American Voices Medal. These Medalist are recognized at the National Ceremony and Art.Write.Now exhibition in New York City.

Criteria
The American Voices & Visions nominees are “Best in Show” awards that most exemplify originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.
